Ghosthack EP
Alan D. Oldham, aka DJ T-1000, is Detroit techno’s original renaissance man. A producer, DJ, label head, visual artist, and graphic designer, Oldham’s influence runs deep through the culture’s DNA. From hosting Detroit’s first all-electronic radio show, Fast Forward, to touring the world with Underground Resistance after Jeff Mills’ departure, his credentials are legendary. As founder of Generator and Pure Sonik Records, Oldham helped define the city’s second wave of techno with his raw, funk-driven sound. Now Berlin-based, he continues to release on cult labels, always with authenticity and realness.
Opener ‘I Told 'Em I Was From Detroit’ is a powerful cut with a spoken word vocal that celebrates Oldham's heritage. Vast bass underlaps the pounding kicks as smeared chords light up the rhythm with fuzzy machine warmth. 'Tracker' is more wild and free with urgent, heavyweight drums and flashy synths spraying about the mix, but always in dialogue with the full-bodied rhythm. 'Heretic' shows another side once more, this time with dubby, uplifting drums and tightly coiled synth patterns that are pure and clean as they melt your mind. Closer 'Ghosthack' has cinematic details that map out a voyage through space on a fulsome deep techno rhythm. The percussion is glitchy, the synths pulse, and the atmosphere is immersive.
